User-Equilibrium Properties of Fixed Points in Dynamic Traffic Assignment∗

چکیده
This paper considers the problem of dynamic traffic assignment under the principle that individual drivers will choose fastest paths, in the dynamic situation where path durations consist of time-dependent link travel times. Rather than constructing a unified model encompassing traffic dynamics and route choice, we decompose the model into an assignment mapping, which identifies the link travel times resulting from an input routing policy, and a routing mapping, which yields fastest-path routings associated with input link travel times. Since time-dynamic link travel times are influenced by route choice, this dynamic situation therefore encompasses predictive routing strategies. We establish that user-equilibrium routing policies are fixed points of the composition of the routing and assignment functions. After discussing difficulties associated with establishing existence of fixed points under discrete-time modeling and all-ornothing routing, we present instead new iterative routing mappings for continuous-time multipath routing (the splitting of a single-class flow onto multiple paths), which adjust routing policies more incrementally. We provide sufficient conditions for existence of fixed points in various routing policy domains and offer some suggestions on the computation of these fixed-point policies. ∗This research was supported in part by the University of Michigan ITS Center. †Business Operations Analysis, AT&T, Room 2B19, 379 Campus Drive, Somerset, NJ 08873 ‡Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 481092117 §Mitretek Systems, Inc., 600 Maryland Avenue, SW, Suite 755, Washington, DC 20024

Different Network Performance Measures in a Multi-Objective Traffic Assignment Problem
Traffic assignment algorithms are used to determine possible use of paths between origin-destination pairs and predict traffic flow in network links. One of the main deficiencies of ordinary traffic assignment methods is that in most of them one measure (mostly travel time) is usually included in objective function and other effective performance measures in traffic assignment are not considere...
متن کاملA dynamical system model of the traffic assignment problem
User equilibrium is a central concept for studying transportation networks, and one can view it as the result of a dynamical process of drivers’ route choice behavior. In this paper, based on a definition of O-D First-In-First-Out violation, we propose a new dynamical system model of the route choice behavior at the aggregate, route level for both static and dynamic transportation networks. An ...

Rapid urban growth is resulting into increase in travel demand and private vehicle ownership in urban areas. In the present scenario the existing infrastructure has failed to match the demand that leads to traffic congestion, vehicular pollution and accidents. With traffic congestion augmentation on the road, delay of commuters has increased and reliability of road network has decreased. Four s...

The growing traffic congestion in urban areas creates an urgent need for a better transportation planning. In this context, traffic assignment models can be used to help public authorities to test the impact of various transportation policies such as enlarging areas where bottleneck occurs, work start time flexbility etc. The representation of traffic variations over time allows dynamic transpo...

This article addresses the problem of simulating en-route path choices on transport networks. In particular, by rerouting, we mean changing the currently chosen path, after receiving some information about a traffic event. Indeed, when the forecasted performance pattern of travel times and costs, known or only perceived, changes significantly, drivers may react by shifting their current route t...
